Salamander Hunting

line

Yesterday he had his climb a tree party.  Today, on his actual birthday, he woke to trick skis on the hearth and zucchini bread.. his favorite.  He humored me through a bit of fractions, and geometry, and grammar.  The rest of the day was up to him.  Our first stop was Petsmart.  Why Petsmart, you ask?  To buy mealworms and dried fruit flies, of course.  I’d like to think I should get a medal for buying these things.  But, it is just a small part of being a mom to a 9 year old boy.  Then we met Andy and we were off into the woods for the great salamander hunt of 2012.  He knows every place to look.  He knows that land so well.  We followed him and enjoyed spending the warm fall day together, just the 5 of us.  Tonight it was pizza and Moomers ice cream cake that he chose.  There were moments today where he seemed so very grown up, like when he texted me from his new Ipod, and when he made sure to wish Amma a happy birthday as well, as she was leaving.   But now, as he is sleeping on my shoulder he still seems very little.  I think this dance will continue for a while, moments of growing up and moments of having a little boy.  Either way, I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter son.
